Lamayuru to Chilling Trek:

The area of Lamayuru was once a lake that miraculously disappeared by the hand of Lotsawa Naropa. The area is today best known for the presence of a monastery there, which was built in the 10th century and is considered as one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh. Trekking across this region is actually visiting this site and getting much acquainted with the Ladakhi culture and tradition that belongs to the Kargyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism.

Trekking across the Lamayuru Chilling area includes getting closer to the natural ambience and scenic beauty of the area along with some of the famous monasteries and the traditional lifestyle of the natives.

The trek that generally starts from the regions of Lamayuru, crosses two passes of 4900 m and 4700 m offering fantastic views of the surrounding Zanskar Mountains en route to Chilling. This is a very small traditional village, lying across the famous Zanskar gorge and is the unique spot from where the trekkers can either head back to Leh by road or more excitingly raft back via the turbulent Zanskar River.

To begin with this moderate trek, the trekkers will be climbing to the Prinkiti La Pass to trek down towards the Shilakong Valley, reaching the beautiful Wanla village. This village would be the outstanding opportunity for a base camp for resting and refreshing. The next day would be head on towards Kongski La, which is at 5,000 meters high to bring great mountaineering ranges. This could be the most sophisticated part of the Ladakh trekking tour to catch the majestic wilds of Ladakh including the mysterious snow leopard and the blue sheep. At Shumdo Choon, the presence of an impressive monastery featured with ancient paintings will captivate the rugged climbers towards the Ladakhi resonance to end with crossing the high passes of Dung Dung La. The other attraction of this trek is that the trekkers can also enjoy a pony trek at Lamayuru for another kind of excitement, which is quite different from the normal walking tour in the Ladakh ranges
